ITINERARY

Día 1.- Arica- Putre

Transfer or public transportation from Arica to Putre can be arranged on your own, or we can provide this service for an additional fee. This extra night will allow for more effective acclimatization, as the body stabilizes better when the previous night’s rest is satisfactory. In case of any medical issues, there is a health clinic (CESFAM) available for altitude sickness.

Día 2: Putre – Trekking de aclimatación.

To achieve gradual acclimatization suited to the demands of this activity, this first high-altitude physical exercise is conducted. We will depart at 3:00 PM from the main square of the town of Putre. From there, we will hike through the pre-Andean landscape toward the transition zone of the high plateau along a trail that connects the town to the Jurasi hot springs. With an elevation gain of 500 meters and some steep sections, this trail will be our first test of hiking in mountain environments.

Día 3: Putre – Campamento Alto.

The adventure begins upon departure from Putre, arriving at the vehicle parking area located at the base of the volcano, where travelers prepare for the hike to High Camp. From there, the trek begins, lasting approximately 4 hours, taking hikers through stunning and ever-changing landscapes. As you gain altitude toward High Camp, you will carry the necessary equipment for the ascent. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views and the serenity of untouched nature, as the air becomes fresher and purer. Upon arrival at High Camp (approximately 5,200 meters above sea level), the camp is set up, and a comforting dinner is prepared to replenish energy after the effort. Finally, travelers can rest under a starry sky, surrounded by the stillness and majesty of the Andes, preparing for the next stage of the ascent.

Día 4: Campamento Alto – Ascenso Volcán Acotango

At 2:00 AM the next day, adventurers face the imposing summit of Acotango, located at 6,052 meters above sea level. The ascent to the top is demanding, with a hike that can last between 7 and 8 hours, depending on weather conditions and participants’ acclimatization (includes a snack on the route). Along the way, the terrain becomes increasingly steep, but the unmatched views and neighboring volcanoes make every step worthwhile. Reaching the summit is a profound experience, offering a 360-degree panorama of the Andes—a unique reward for those who conquer this majestic volcano.

ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS

• Be 18 years of age or older.

• Participants must complete and sign a Risk Assumption form required by SERNATUR, as well as a medical questionnaire that we request at the time of booking the service. Failure to comply with the expedition’s rules, actions, and regulations may result in service cancellation at the discretion of the lead guide, who may declare this explicitly or implicitly.

• Participants must be in good health and physically prepared for the activity, which involves trekking and mountaineering carrying a backpack weighing between 12 kg and 17 kg over rough terrain, including rocky paths, slopes, snow, ice, and elevation changes.

 ASSUMED RISKS

Any outdoor activity carries inherent risks related to the environment and the activity itself; however, due to the nature of the location and what we will be doing, please take the following points into consideration:

• We will be in a remote environment, meaning medical assistance will be more than two hours away by vehicle from our Base Camp location.

• Along the route, there is a risk of falling rocks in the event of tremors or an earthquake.

• Since we will be at altitudes ranging from 3,500 to 6,342 meters above sea level, we will be exposed to the risk of altitude sickness.

• Being an arid area with little vegetation, the risk of fire is very low.

• Other risks such as heat stroke or hypothermia may occur if necessary precautions are not taken.

Expect minimum temperatures around -15°C and maximum temperatures up to 10°C.
