Itinerary
Día 1.- Arica- Putre
Transfer or public transportation from Arica to Putre can be arranged on your own, or we can provide this service for an additional fee. This extra night will allow for more effective acclimatization, as the body stabilizes better when the previous night’s rest is satisfactory. In case of any medical issues, there is a health clinic (CESFAM) available for altitude sickness.
Día 2: Putre – Trekking de aclimatación.
To achieve gradual acclimatization suited to the demands of this activity, this first high-altitude physical exercise is conducted. We will depart at 3:00 PM from the main square of the town of Putre. From there, we will hike through the pre-Andean landscape toward the transition zone of the high plateau along a trail that connects the town to the Jurasi hot springs. With an elevation gain of 500 meters and some steep sections, this trail will be our first test of hiking in mountain environments.
Día 3. Putre – Campamento Alto.
From Putre, we will drive towards the Casiri Lagoons area, which is part of Lauca National Park. From there, we will continue in a 4×4 vehicle up to the lower slopes of this volcano, where most of the emergency and support logistics provided by the staff will be located. After that, we will carry all the necessary gear to set up High Camp and bring the technical equipment required for the ascent. This section has an elevation gain of 540 meters (1,772 feet), and High Camp will be established at 4,950 meters (16,240 feet) above sea level, where we will spend the night.
Día 4. Campamento Alto – Cumbre del Volcán Kunturiri – Putre.
On this day, we will set out early in the morning with the goal of reaching the summit of Mount Kunturiri. The route covers a total distance of 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) over approximately 9 hours, with an elevation gain of 810 meters (2,657 feet), reaching the summit at an altitude of 5,736 meters (18,819 feet) above sea level. After the ascent, we will return to High Camp to pack up and then descend to the vehicles for the return trip to Putre.
