This tour offers you a complete experience of the cultural and natural diversity of northern Chile, with stunning views, historic sites, and the warmth of the local culture.

Day 1

At 8:00 AM, we will pick you up from your hotel in Arica to explore the unique charms of the Azapa Valley, where you will visit the San Miguel Museum to learn about the region’s rich history. Then, dive into the Lluta Valley, home to the historic Church of Poconchile, an iconic architectural treasure. The route continues to the Quebrada de Cardones National Monument, where you’ll be amazed by the Magnetic Zone and the majestic candelabra-shaped cacti that decorate the landscape. In the picturesque village of Malku, you’ll experience the essence of rural Andean life before heading to the Pukara de Copaquilla, an ancient fortress offering panoramic views and an immersion into pre-Inca history. The journey will also take you to the Tambo de Zapahuira, an important archaeological site along the ancestral Andean route. Next, you’ll explore the charming town of Socoroma, known for its connection to the ancient Inca Trail, and finally arrive in Putre, a picturesque Andean village that will be the perfect ending to your adventure.

 

Day 2

At 8:00 AM, we will pick you up from your hotel in Putre and head towards the surroundings of Lauca National Park—a beautiful highland landscape located in northern Chile, near the border with Bolivia. Our first stop will be at Lake Chungará, situated at 4,500 meters above sea level. After admiring its stunning scenery, we will proceed to the heart of Lauca National Park to behold the majestic Payachata volcanoes. The main peaks include Parinacota, Pomerape, Acotango, and Guallatiri, all exceeding 6,000 meters in altitude. As we explore this protected natural area, we will see the famous alpacas, llamas, and vicuñas of the Chilean highlands. We will take a break for a set-menu lunch at a local restaurant. The route will continue to the Cotacotani Lagoons, another natural gem within Lauca National Park. The park’s surroundings also have a very special charm, which we will discover by visiting the town of Parinacota, whose church is declared a National Monument. Additionally, we will learn about the area’s past at the archaeological sites of Chaku and Las Cuevas. We will then return to your hotel in Putre for an overnight stay.

 

Day 3

Your day begins with a visit to the Las Vicuñas National Reserve, where you’ll discover wildlife in its natural habitat, including the elegant vicuña, in areas such as Misitune, Chua, Lauca Cruzani, and Visluvio. Continue your adventure to the Surire Salt Flat Natural Monument, a dazzling salt flat that is home to flamingos and other Andean species. In this region, you’ll be amazed by views of Chinchillani and Chilcaya lakes, as well as the chance to relax in the Polloquere hot springs, known for their soothing thermal waters set in an impressive natural environment. The tour continues to Isluga National Park, a refuge of biodiversity and natural beauty. Explore the picturesque Enquelca Valley and marvel at the arid, mountainous landscape that defines the region. As you head south, you will arrive at Colchane, a charming border town offering insight into life on the high plateau. Finally, conclude your journey in Cariquima, a picturesque village that embodies the cultural essence and spirit of the Andean area, where you will stay overnight in a rural hostel.

Day 4

Your journey continues to Ancovinto, where you’ll be amazed by the towering Giant Cacti dotting the landscape. You’ll also have the chance to explore the Coipasa Salt Flat, a vast salt desert offering breathtaking views and a unique highland experience. Next, you’ll discover the Tarapacá Gorge, a scenic route with stops in Pachica and Tarapacá, where you can enjoy the natural beauty and striking contrasts of the area’s landscapes. Don’t miss the iconic Tarapacá Giant, an enigmatic geoglyph that has been a mystery for centuries. The tour will then take you to Huara, a small but charming town that offers a glimpse into rural Andean life. Afterward, you’ll explore the historic site of Humberstone, an old nitrate mining town declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which will help you understand the impact of the nitrate industry on the region. Finally, conclude your adventure in Pica, known for its oases and vibrant local culture. Enjoy its refreshing climate and famous hot springs before ending your trip with unforgettable memories, staying overnight at a local lodging.

Day 5 

We’ll enjoy a relaxing breakfast in this refreshing destination before beginning your journey along the historic Nitrate Route. Here, you’ll explore the region’s rich mining heritage, discovering how the nitrate industry shaped the landscape and history of northern Chile. Along the way, we’ll stop in Quillagua, where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch in this small and welcoming town. The local cuisine will provide you with an authentic taste of regional gastronomy in a genuine atmosphere. You will then continue your trip to Chuquicamata, one of the largest open-pit mines in the world. The scale and history of this site will leave you impressed as you explore the area and learn about its importance in the mining industry. Finally, you’ll head to Huatacondo, a charming village in the heart of the desert. With its rich history and stunning landscapes, Huatacondo will offer you a unique perspective on the desert environment and its influence on local life. We will rest overnight in a rural hostel.

Day 6

Begin your adventure in the charming and remote village of Huatacondo. Set in an impressive desert landscape, Huatacondo offers you an authentic experience with its arid scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Here, you’ll have the chance to experience local life and enjoy panoramic views that only the desert can offer. After exploring Huatacondo, you will head to San Pedro de Atacama, the heart of the Atacama Desert and a world-renowned destination. Drop-off at your hotel.

Includes: Shared transportation, first aid, Spanish-speaking driver-guide. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and accommodations. If you need a private trip or an English-speaking guide, the price can be negotiated. There is plenty of time to plan your visit. Small groups with a minimum of 2 passengers to start.
