At 8:00 a.m., we\u2019ll pick you up from your hotel in Putre and head toward the international border between Chile and Bolivia, near the highland Casiri Lagoons, in the Andean village of Caquena, located at an altitude of 3,900 meters (12,795 feet).<\/p>\n
The border between the two countries runs along the summit of this mountain, with Landmark XVI located at the Casiri Pass, which once connected the Chilean village of Caquena with the Bolivian town of Sajama.<\/p>\n
We\u2019ll begin the trekking route by walking around the lagoon toward Landmark XVI. Then, using GPS at all times to avoid crossing the border into Bolivia\u2014since the boundary in this area does not follow a straight line\u2014we\u2019ll ascend through a gully with loose volcanic rocks and sand. The trail leads to about 30 meters below the summit, where large rock fragments, some over 2 meters high, dominate the terrain. These can be navigated with a few minutes of light climbing, without major difficulty.<\/p>\n
The route is of moderate to high difficulty, suitable for individuals with prior mountain experience. The hike takes between 6 and 8 hours, depending on pace and terrain conditions. During the trek, you\u2019ll reach a maximum altitude of 5,300 meters (17,388 feet) above sea level, so it is essential to be well-acclimatized and prepared for the extreme conditions of high-altitude environments.<\/p>\n
We\u2019ll stop at the summit to enjoy a picnic that includes sandwiches, nuts, chocolate, and natural juices, before beginning the descent.<\/p>\n
From there, we\u2019ll head back to your hotel in Putre, with an estimated arrival between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.<\/p>\n
